My hair was crying out for help and kept breaking off – now it’s long and shiny thanks to a DIY five-ingredient mask
A BEAUTY enthusiast has revealed a homemade hair mask helped to strengthen her breaking tresses.
She used several ingredients that most people already have in their pantries to create the hair growth remedy.
Iyanna (@jhaileniyanna) has over 14,000 followers on TikTok, where she routinely shares beauty tips.
She revealed the secret behind her lengthy locks is a DIY hair mask, after being asked about affordable haircare solutions.
“If you’re bald-headed and your hair keeps breaking off it’s because you need protein,” she said.
“It’s literally crying out for help and being neglected.”
She held up a large glass jar containing a creamy mixture before revealing what was inside.
“This mask has ingredients that you can literally make in your house,” she said.
“You need two eggs, one spoon of yoghurt.
“This kind of acts like a conditioner, if you want you can just use conditioner instead of yogurt.
“We need honey and what this is gonna do is help with the shine of your hair,” she said scraping a tablespoon of Manuka honey into the jar.
“We need a carrier oil something like castor oil or coconut oil.
“You’re gonna need a lot of it so make sure to use a carrier oil that’s cheap to buy.
“Next is my favorite oil which stimulates hair growth - rosemary and peppermint.”
Iyanna used castor oil as her carrier oil and said peppermint stops the scalp from itching.
“We’re gonna mix it all up,” she said using a spoon to combine the ingredients.
“Also if you don’t have yogurt or conditioner you can also use mayonnaise.
“It is gonna stink though so I’m warning you.”
Iyanna divided her hair into four sections and brushed it thoroughly to make sure that it wasn’t tangled.
She said brushing out any knots makes it “easier” to apply the product.
“I’ve sectioned my hair off and you kind of want to use this as if it was a perm,” she said referring to the mask.
“It’s gonna be really runny but it’s packed full of protein.
“Make sure you apply it to your ends, my ends are looking a little nasty so I’m definitely applying it.
“You will get a better result if you do it after a hot oil treatment.
“Everybody’s hair needs protein, some just might need less or more.”
She then used a comb to ensure that her hair was covered from root to tip in the mixture.
She put one side of her hair in a bun before starting on the other side and recommended covering it with a bag until ready to rinse out.
“I love the added shine that this gives my hair,” she said. “My hair is literally glistening through the screen.”
Iyanna said the mask can be left in as long as you want but she would be leaving hers in for 45 minutes to an hour before washing it out.
“This is also a good treatment to do before you flat iron your hair,” she added.
“It’s gonna enhance all that shine you get from a flat iron already.”
Iyanna described her hair as being “silky” after she applied the mask to all of her hair.
She advised using the mask once or twice a month for best results and rinsing with cold water.

“What this mask is going to do is strengthen, and moisturize dry, brittle hair,” she said.
