Unify League latest reaction: Fallout as European Super League RELAUNCHED and set to rival Champions League

  • How many English sides can join the new European Super League proposal?

There would be 16 teams, split into two groups of eight and playing each opponent home and away, in both the top tier Star League and the secondary Gold League.

Then two further competitions - Blue and Union - would each have FOUR leagues of eight clubs

The Premier League would have THREE guaranteed entrants in the elite competition.

With two places in the second one and up to five further slots across the remaining pair.

Two places in the Star League, and seven in Gold, will be earned through a series of play-off rounds, with the winners of the two competitions earning automatic places in the top tier for the following season.

  • What happened to the European Super League idea last time?

The idea for a club based league competition to be played midweek and on weekends was widely scrutinised and rejected when the first announcement came in 2021.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham were 12 clubs who agreed to join.

In a seismic move for European football, the Premier League clubs planned to join AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.

The ESL said the founding clubs had agreed to establish a "new midweek competition" with teams continuing to "compete in their respective national leagues".

But after intense backlash 32 months ago, nine of its 12 founder members dropped out almost immediately.

That followed widespread opposition which in England went as far as then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Royal Family through Football Association president Prince William.

But the concept has been given fresh impetus.

  • What is the new Super League relaunch?

It will see a restructuring of the Champions League.

Under the new model, named “The Unify League”, 96 teams in total would take part.

There would be 16 teams, split into two groups of eight and playing each opponent home and away, in both the top tier Star League and the secondary Gold League.

Then two further competitions – Blue and Union – would each have FOUR leagues of eight clubs.
