Aberfan stabbing: man charged with attempted murder

A 28-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a pregnant woman who was stabbed in a street in the village of Aberfan in south Wales.

The incident on Tuesday morning led to a search by armed officers, and two schools and a childcare centre were put into lockdown.

South Wales police said: “Daniel Mihai Popescu, from Merthyr has today, Wednesday 6 December, been charged with attempted murder following an incident on Moy Road, Aberfan, Merthyr, yesterday morning. He will appear at Merthyr magistrates court tomorrow morning, Thursday 7 December at 10am.”

A spokesperson said the 29-year-old woman who was injured has been discharged from hospital.

Police said there would be extra patrols in Aberfan to provide public reassurance. They have not named the woman or provided any personal medical information about her.
