But you'll need to look carefully to spy the American bullfrog.

One hint is that it's green and brown.

That bland-sounding coloration allows them to become camouflaged among plants growing in ponds.

And it also helps them hide from predators.

Or, look for its large, bulging eyes positioned on the top of its head.

BOOZE CALL

Male bullfrogs have a distinctive call which sounds as if they are on the look out for booze.

Their "jug-o-rum" croak rings out as they try to attract mates and establish territory.

You can often hear them singing in spring and summer during mating season, said the National Park Service.

"When an American bullfrog is captured by a predator that wants to eat it, it makes a loud screeching sound to warn other frogs about the predator," added the Alabama Wildlife Federation.

Being well camouflaged means they can hunt out prey, too.

The cold-blooded frogs like tucking into a smorgasbord of critters.

They'll happily eat insects, salamanders, small snakes, turtles, and even small birds.

CANNIBALS

But if those aren't readily available, they'll even start chomping on fellow frogs - as they are cannibalistic, said the AWF.

Their agile limbs allow them to jump up to 10 times their body length - the equivalent of a 6 foot tall human leaping 60 feet.

And their prey can't escape easily as the amphibians - which can weigh up to 1 lb - have four teeth to trap their meals in their mouths.
