AN interior designer has waged war on design mistakes that make your home look cheap.

It doesn't have to be this way and her method shows you how to do it for less.

Follow her style rules and your home can look more high-end than Ikea.

Stylish Taylee Hawkins (@spacesbytay) shared her four easy steps to design nirvana.

“Four things that make your home look cheap," she said in her post.

FLOOR COVERINGS

Who would have thought carpet size could make such a difference?

“A small rug [can] make the space feel small," she said.

“And it's not well thought out design-wise," she added.

Up the size if you want a luxury factor instead.

SHOPPING DESTINATIONS

It's become the place to go if you are furnishing your home on a modest budget.

But it doesn't have to be Ikea all the way, she said.

Instead, Taylee urged her viewers to try Facebook Market Place.

We transformed an old school bus into a cosy tiny home - we even managed to build in a shower

Search there and find the same things for the same price, or even cheaper.

It's a win-win as far as she is concerned because you could end up with a look more high-end than bargain basement.

COLOR SPECTRUM

Muted and neutral palettes are all very well, but where's the color, she asked.

You have to have a color scheme to break up the monotony.

STUFFING APPEAL

If you have pillows, they need to be big, fluffy, and puffy.

Do not have "cheap or flat pillows," she said.

This need not break the bank because she said you can get really decent ones from Amazon.

Budget interior design tips

Interior designer Judy Hoang shared her furniture tips with The U.S. Sun.

  • Thrift furniture and paint it to match your decor.
  • Test if an item is fit for its purpose before thrifting.
  • Shop at Target or HomeGoods for rugs, lamps, desks, and pillows.
  • Invest in classic timeless pieces.
  • Set up smart home lighting to save money.

Commenters were torn over her style tips.

“Great tips, thank you," said one person.

“Yes to the flat pillows. That drives me up the wall," said another.

But a third person took issue with some of her style hacks.

“Disagree with the Ikea part. A lot of their modern furniture looks very nice in a home if placed right with the right aesthetic," they wrote.
