France vs Germany betting preview: Best odds and predictions for international football clash

France hosts Germany in a clash between two of the favourites to win this summer’s UEFA Euro 2024 on Saturday night.

The Germans have been in disarray lately. A visit to Lyon to face the French will tell us a lot about how far the team has come under the leadership of Julian Nagelsmann.

France vs Germany betting preview

This match should be a showdown between two powerhouses of European football. Instead, it has the feel of a fixture that will have German fans hiding behind their sofas.

France has a mercurial squad of talent to choose from. Arguably the best in Europe. They have just got to the final of the 2022 World Cup, where they probably should have won, and they also coasted through their Euro 2024 qualifying group.

The only recent blot on the copybook for Didier Deschamps and his team was a poor Nations League campaign that almost saw them relegated out of Group A.

Now, the French seem to have clicked into gear nicely as they head towards the Euros. In their last ten games across all competitions, they have won eight, keeping six clean sheets.

All seems good with Les Bleus again.

For the Germans, it has been anything but plain sailing. After a disastrous run of results, Hansi Flick was sacked in September 2023. In doing so, Flick set a new record of becoming the first manager ever to be dismissed from the role in the history of his job.

Making a change so close to a tournament was the last thing that the German Football Association would have wanted to do. His successor, former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann, hasn’t fared much better.

Nagelsmann started with a 3-1 win over the USA. But since that sole win, Germany has drawn 2-2 with Mexico and lost 3-2 at home to Turkey and 2-0 away to Austria.

A match against the French can go one of two ways. The Germans will get hammered. Or they will show the footballing world they are back and a force to be reckoned with again. The former seems more likely.

France vs Germany key stats

  • France qualified for the 2024 Euro finals by finishing top of Group B with 22 points from their eight games. Les Bleus won seven and drew one, scoring a mammoth 29 goals and conceding just three.
  • Germany qualified as hosts for UEFA Euro 2024. And it’s a good job they did because given their form while the rest of Europe was playing qualifiers, they probably wouldn’t have made it.
  • In the 2024 Euros, France is in Group D with the Netherlands, Austria, and whoever wins the playoff between Wales and Poland on Tuesday.
  • The Germans are in Group A with Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland
  • France and Germany have met 33 times. France have won 15, Germany 11, with seven draws.
  • The most recent match was a 2-1 win for Germany in a September friendly. That result ended a six-match winless run for the Germans against the French.
  • In the latest FIFA rankings, France is ranked second. Germany is down in 16th place.

Kylian Mbappe to score anytime (Spreadex)

PSG’s star man is about to jump ship from Ligue 1, with Real Madrid his likely destination this summer.

The top scorer of the 2022 World Cup has scored 24 goals in 24 games for his club side this season, and this, with relations strained between himself and his current employers.

At 25, Mbappe is in the prime years of his career. He will no doubt be looking to remind the rest of the nations competing in Germany this summer just how good he is.

Back Kylian Mbappe to score anytime at 10/11 with Spreadex

France to score over 1.5 goals (bet365)

France has scored two goals or more in seven of their ten matches since the 2022 World Cup final. At home, the record is four to one. Only Greece stopped them from scoring more than once.

Didier Deschamps’ team will be looking to lay down a marker to their rivals ahead of the Euros. At the very least, the hosts should manage a couple.

France (-1) to win on handicap (Sky Bet)

Assuming the struggling Germany of late turns up, or Nagelsmann decides to play with fire and experiment, the French should win this match with plenty to spare.

France is a slick, well-oiled machine. They don’t need to tinker too much. They simply need to carry on as they are. The most Didier Deschamps needs to do is look at one or two squad players.

If France is at full strength, they could hammer the Germans.
