Sara Tavares dead – Portuguese Eurovision star dies aged 45 after battling brain tumour
PORTUGAL'S 1994 Eurovision singer Sara Tavares has died aged 45 after a lengthy battle with a brain tumour.
Tavares, who famously represented the country when the competition was held in Dublin, passed away in Lisbon on Sunday.
Her tragic death was announced by her devastated family, according to Portuguese reports, and follows a 10-year hiatus from music to focus on her health.
The musician's song "Chamar a Música" came in eighth place in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest - one of Portugal's best ever results at the contest.
Her performance received 12 votes from the Spanish jury and points by 13 out of the 25 participating nations.
Born in Lisbon in 1978, Tavares' career took off when she won the first edition of Portuguese talent show Chuva de Estrelas in 1994.
After her eighth-place finish in Dublin later that year, she released her debut album "Sara Tavares & Shout!".
She went on to release several more over the next two decades including her 2005 album "Balance" which earned her a platinum record nomination at the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards.
