He spent some time with Queen Elizabeth after the ceremony at Buckingham Palace, but was left embarrassed after making a 'working class' comment.

Sir David only shared his memory of the experience about two decades later while being interviewed about his new show, David and Jay's Touring Toolshed.

The BBC craft programme will follow Jay Blades and the actor around the UK as they meet talented crafters around the country.

Co-star Jay has also spent time with the Royal family, which got the pair reminiscing.

Sir David groaned with embarrassment as he recounted his conversation with the late Queen, saying: " I felt such a wally because she said, 'What are you doing at the moment?' and I said, 'I’m making a Christmas special of Only Fools and ’Orses, Your Majesty.'

"It was so East End working class, and as it fell out of my mouth I was just thinking, there’s no way on planet Earth that she would watch that sort of show."

However, Jay feels no shame about putting formalities aside when interacting with royalty.

Sir David joked about his co-star's behaviour around King Charles, adding: "Jay just goes and puts his arm around him. The effrontery!"
