Tracy Barlow makes huge mistake with husband Steve McDonald in fiery Coronation Street scenes

STEVE McDonald and Tracy Barlow have been married for several years but their relationship could soon hit a wall.

The Coronation Street couple face a hurdle when the villainess makes a huge mistake in scenes airing next week.

ITV viewers have predicted trouble ahead for the iconic couple as a beloved character recently returned to the cobbles, bumping into Tracy for the first time on Christmas Day in Preston's Petals.

As regular viewers of the Manchester-based program will recall, actor Matt Milburn reprised his role as Tommy Orpington and a huge affair has been teased for him - could it be with Tracy?

Coming up, the florist played by Kate Ford unwraps her birthday present from Steve (Simon Gregson) and is underwhelmed when she discovers it's a cherry stone pillow.

Chucking it back at him, Tracy tells Steve she wants their bedroom redecorating and he can start today.

When Tracy moans to pal and assistant Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) about lazy Steve and how she doubts he’ll ever get round to the decorating, Mary suggests she should hire a professional. 

In later scenes, it's clear that Tracy has agreed to follow Mary's advice as she turns to Tommy Orpington for the job.

Tracy later shows her new decorator, into No.1 where Tommy reveals that he’s a retired footballer.

Meanwhile, Steve returns home and is stunned to find his hero in the living room.

Tracy reminds Steve that they’ve hired Tommy to do the decorating and he’s not to distract him. 

How will Steve react?

As mentioned above, Tommy is expected to fall head over heels for a well-established character in Weatherfield, as promised by soap boss Iain MacLeod.

"He, since leaving football, has made some bad business investments, not the least of which was opening a Tommy Orpington themed gourmet burger restaurant, which has been established on screen", the producer told The Sun.

"Anyway, they've all gone belly up, his wife has left him and he's now had to return to the trade he had when he was a non league footballer, which is painter and decorator."

"He is now single, and there might be one of our female characters that needs some decorating done - not a euphemism."

"So, yes, there's basically a story that evolves where this attractive, successful historically, man arrives into one of our female character’s lives and upsets the apple cart in fairly spectacular fashion, shall we say."

"You'll know quite quickly who I'm talking about, probably, when you see the episode, but I'd rather not say too much now, just so that you can enjoy that surprise for yourselves when we get to Christmas."

Steve bonded with Tommy in the past when his former wife Michelle Connor had been hired as a wedding planner by the former football star.

Could the pair of men wind up in an explosive feud over Tracy?
