Often we can blame dry weather when it comes to grass turning straw-like and discoloured. However, the most common causes of lawn discoloration involve wet weather and mistakes made during mowing.

Steven Bell, Managing Director of Paving Shopper, shared his insights on the true causes of lawn discoloration and how to maintain a lush, green lawn…

The expert explained: “Often, yellow patches on your lawn are due to wet weather and improper mowing techniques rather than just dryness.

“Understanding these factors is crucial to lawn care.

“A well-maintained lawn not only looks beautiful but also adds value to your home.”

Sharpen mower blades

One common issue is using a mower with dull blades.

Steven continued: "If your lawn has white tips, it's a sign that the mower is tearing the grass blades rather than cutting them cleanly.

"Ensure that mower blades are sharpened after every 25 hours of use to prevent this."

Disease discoloration

Fungal diseases can also cause lawn discoloration.

Steven added: "Red thread gives your lawn a reddish tint during warm, wet weather.

Mow frequently

He shared: "Mowing your lawn regularly prevents many issues. It helps control fungal diseases and keeps the grass healthy.
