Lotus sports car ‘in outstanding condition’ driven by two F1 legends hits auction for six-figure price
A LOTUS sports car 'in outstanding condition' driven by two F1 legends is up for auction at a six-figure price.
The Lotus Cortina was driven by the legendary Jackie Stewart and serial winner Jim Clark.
Clark perfected the Cortina's trademark three wheel corner when the car's inside front was lifted over the marker.
The crowds went wild as Jim took on Ford Galaxies raced by Jack Sears, Dan Gurney and Jack Brabham.
Jim won the 1964 British Saloon Car Championship in the motor, which acquired a cult status with fans.
He roared around Crystal Palace, Oulton Park, Goodwood, Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Aintree and Silverstone as the crowds roared him on.
The motor was the dream child of Ford executive Walter Hayes. Lotus transformed Ford’s sporting saloon into a potent speed machine.
The stunning motor, which sports the Lotus team livery, has been beautifully restored and is now up for auction.
The auction house Fiskens said: "Restored by Lotus expert Andy Middlehurst, subsequently in the Tom Walkinshaw collection and that of Cortina-racer Kerry Michael. Offered in outstanding order from the stables of a renowned Scots racing driver.
"Recently exhibited at the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum in Scotland, and an instantly recognisable symbol of one of the greatest drivers in Formula One history."
