If you've never had to shop for a wedding suit before, it can be hard to know where to start looking for where to buy wedding suits, especially with so many different styles to choose from.

Traditionally men wore formal morning suits to get married, which usually consisted of a black jacket with tails, a waistcoat and sometimes even a top hat.

Nowadays, however, lots of other styles of suit are appropriate to wear for a wedding, including colourful designs, fashionable slim-cut shapes and ones made from fabrics such as tweed or tartan.

It's important that you feel comfortable on your big day, so choose a suit that not only fits well but also is in keeping with your style – if you always wear skinny jeans then you might want to stick to a slim-fit suit, for example.

Alternatively, you could match your suit to the style of your wedding; if you're getting married in a rustic country barn, say, you might want to choose a tweed two-piece.

Another thing to consider is the price.

You may only be wearing your wedding suit on one day in your lifetime (although plenty are versatile enough to wear again), so it's worth thinking about how much you want to spend.

Luckily there are loads of great wedding suits on the high street nowadays, from retailers such as Moss Bros, River Island, ASOS and Ted Baker, with something to suit every budget.

Can you wear a black suit to a wedding?

Yes, you absolutely can wear a black suit to a wedding; in fact, we think it can look really cool.

Morning suit jackets are traditionally black (although they're often paired with grey trousers), and tuxedos are usually black too.

To stop a black suit from looking too 'funeral attire', it's all about what you pair it with – for example, instead of wearing it with a white shirt and black tie, why not try an open-neck printed shirt, a T-shirt or trainers?

We've found some of the best black wedding suits in the round-up above from brands like Topman, ASOS and River Island.

What colour suit for a wedding?

Traditionally grooms wore classic coloured suits for a wedding – black, grey, navy – but nowadays the options are endless.

We think that if in doubt, navy and dark grey suits will always look flattering and timeless, and you could always add a twist by opting for a checked fabric.

Other dark colours can add a modern spin, such as burgundy, dark green or brown, and if you're getting married in the summer or a hot location, a cream suit could look great.

Alternatively, you could go all out with a pastel or brightly coloured two- or three-piece.

While the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in your suit, it's important to discuss your options with your fiancé/fiancée to ensure the style is in keeping with the wedding overall.

What colour tie to wear with a grey suit for a wedding?

If you've decided to wear a grey suit for your wedding, you'll want to make sure that accessories such as the tie perfectly complement it.

We think that a black tie can look a little too stark against a grey suit, so instead try a more muted colour.

Dark red or dark blue looks nice, as do pastel colours like pale pink, green or blue.

Alternatively, you could opt for a tie in a different shade of grey, and perhaps one with a print or pattern on it – this textured tie from Moss Bros comes in loads of different colours.

One nice idea is to match your tie to the bridesmaids' dresses, flowers or tableware, to keep with your wedding's theme.

What colour tie to wear with a navy suit for a wedding?

Navy is one of the most common colours of wedding suits for men, and you can personalise your look depending on what colour tie you pick.

Pairing a navy suit with a pale pink tie is a popular choice amongst grooms, and pale blue, grey or light yellow ties will give a similar look.

Alternatively, if you're having a winter wedding, a dark red tie would look great, or you could stick with the blue theme and make your suit, waistcoat and tie all the same shade of blue.

One nice idea is for all the ushers and groomsmen to wear one colour tie, and the groom to wear a different colour.
