Israel said it will open the Kerem Shalom border crossing as an aid screening site Tuesday, a move that could help increase the volume of desperately needed goods entering the Gaza Strip as it continues to suffer from shortages of food and medical supplies. Concerns of a wider war appear to be growing, with Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz telling Secretary of State Antony Blinken that attacks by Hezbollah along the Lebanese border demand a response from Israel and the U.S. Central Command confirming another missile launched from Yemen struck a commercial ship in the Red Sea.

The U.N. General Assembly is expected to hold an emergency special session Tuesday at the request of Egypt and Mauritania. Both nations cited the United States’ veto of a cease-fire resolution backed by the majority of the Security Council as a reason for requesting the session.
The White House pitched to allies a multinational naval task force to that would protect commercial vessels traveling near Yemen, calling the idea a “natural response” after the Houthis — a Yemeni militant group aligned with Iran — fired missiles and one-way drones at several ships and hijacked at least one in recent weeks.
Israel used U.S.-supplied white phosphorus munitions in an October attack that injured at least nine civilians in southern Lebanon, according to a Washington Post analysis of shell fragments found in a small village. Rights groups have said the act should be investigated as a war crime.
At least 18,205 people have been killed in Gaza and more than 49,645 wounded since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. At least 1,200 people were killed in Israel during Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack.
