My son’s grandparents reckon his name is ‘child abuse’ but it’s a traditional choice so I don’t get the big deal

PICKING the perfect name for your little one is always a pretty big deal, after all they'll probably be stuck with it for life.

But one mum faced backlash from her husband's parents after she picked an unusual name for her newborn.

The mum-to-be had her heart set on naming her son Gaylord.

Despite the name being a traditional choice, it's fair to say it's fallen out of fashion.

That said, the mum claimed the name has been to go-to for firstborn boys on her side of the family since the 1800s, so it was a no-brainer as far as she was concerned.

Her husband agreed with naming the little one Gaylord, that is until his parents caught wind of their plan.

Since them the little one's grandparents have been fuming about the name choice and have even gone as far to call it "child abuse."

And even though her husband was on her side as far as the name went he's since changed his mind, she claimed.

She confessed: "I'm well aware it's a stigmatised name today, so that's why I have agreed to using a short form."

"The name is Gaylord. I get it, trust me, I know most people hate it," she added.

"That is why I've been able to discuss with my parents and grandparents that he will go by Gail in daily life so that he doesn't have to deal with bullies."

The expectant mum went on to say that he in-laws want her to "get with the times" and pick a more modern name for the tot.

As far as they're concerned, nicknaming the baby boy Gail is just as bad as Gaylord.

"They gave me a list of approved names like I'm a child, which is incredibly offensive to me. They have no right to name my own baby for me.

"I don't think my husband would have such an issue if it wasn't for his family interfering, since he didn't have a problem with it a year ago. What happened to respecting our elders and traditions?"

Since her husband's family don't have any naming traditions, the mum felt it was unfair this one was being taken from her.

"How could I be expected to break a centuries old family tradition? I can't get past this, and neither can my in-laws," she continued.

After posting her dilemma on Reddit, one person advised: "I work with elementary age children and this is a terrible idea.

"I'm sorry, but no. Definitely do not name your child Gaylord in any form or fashion."

A second agreed: "Some traditions reach the point where they are no longer suitable for modern times.

"This is 100 percent that time. Pick another name."
