The dress had been estimated to fetch as little as $100,000 (£78,776).
Complete with shoulder pads and a bow, it was made from fabric chosen by textile merchant Jakob Schlaepher and features metallic stars.
The dress, sold at Julien’s Auctions in Hollywood, has a ballerina skirt, considered to be a nod to Diana’s love of dance and her patronage of the English National Ballet.
Diana, was 23 when she wore the dress for a dinner in Florence in April 1985.
She wore many Azagury pieces and the designer also created her 1981 wedding dress.
