Immobile on the spot to give Lazio edge as 10-man Bayern Munich struggle again

Ciro Immobile’s second-half penalty earned Lazio a shock 1-0 first-leg win over 10-man Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16.

Immobile sent Manuel Neuer the wrong way from 12 yards in the 69th minute after Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano was sent off for a late challenge on Gustav Isaksen.

The Bundesliga side, who arrived in Rome on the back of a damaging 3-0 defeat to title rivals Bayer Leverkusen, dominated first-half possession but were unable to capitalise, with Harry Kane largely starved of service.

Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala went close for the six-time European champions but they were toothless throughout, failing to get a single effort on target in the match. Disciplined Lazio stifled the attacks before Immobile’s spot-kick settled the contest to increase pressure on Bayern’s manager, Thomas Tuchel.

Kane said: “[It’s been] a really tough week. We had good chances in the first half, but in the second half we had less energy, created less, and once you go down to 10 men, it’s difficult.

“We have to keep fighting; we’re still in the Bundesliga race, and we can still turn this tie around. One game, one spark can change things.”
