I get told to ‘get a job’ by trolls because I live in a council house – but I actually have TWO and side-hustle

BEING a mum is said to be one of the hardest full-time jobs in the world. But with the Cost of Living Crisis biting hard most women still also bust their guts to hold down one, if not two, jobs to make ends meet.

And although this is the case for so many women - trolls still like to come after those who are lucky enough to have council housing support too.

Like a single mum called Alex, who recently clapped back mum-shaming hater who slammed her for applying to live in affordable housing. They even had the audacity to tell her she needed to “get a job” and “stop having kids you can’t afford.”

Alex often documents her life as a single mum to baby Wren on her TikTok page called _Alexandrawren_.

Here she shares the ups and downs of motherhood and her struggle to acquire affordable housing from her council.

In one post Alex shares the fight and delight she had when she finally found a property to call a home and raise her son.

But despite her elation, has since received negative comments from trolls online.

Alex explained in a caption:  “I get ignorant comments every single day on my videos but I don’t care. I don’t think having a council house is something ever to be ashamed of and I will continue to share my journey.”

Clapping back against the trolls and their stereotypical assumptions, the mother of one has continued to document her life as well as her working life to prove them wrong.

Not only does the single mother have a job, she actually has two.

Are you eligible for a council house?

You are eligible to apply for council housing if you are a British citizen living in the UK and you have not lived abroad recently.

Each council has its own local rules about who qualifies to go on the housing register in its area, but it is based on "points" or a "banding" system.

For example, you’re likely to be offered housing first if you:

  • are homeless
  • live in cramped conditions
  • have a medical condition made worse by your current home

Once you are high enough on a council's waiting list, it will contact you with an available property.

When you can apply varies.

Some councils let people apply at the age of 18, while others even let 16-year-olds apply.

EU workers and their families and refugees may also be eligible.

In another post “aimed specifically at the people who told me to get a job when I said I have a council house”, we see Alex enjoying her lunch break in her work uniform. The clip conjured up lots of support from her followers who shared similar experiences of stereotyping online and in real life.

The single mum even manages to hold down her own online business where she takes her own time to make handmade and personalised cardigans, jumpers, blankets and hats.

In her post Alex beams as she showcases her handmade creations.

One commenter wrote: “Ignore them, you're doing better than so many people especially those keyboard warriors.”

Another wrote: “These are adorable. What a great ‘more job’”.
She takes orders via her Instagram page @lilwren.embroidery.
