‘Absolute life hack’, people say about a trick which makes their homes smell fabulous – but it leaves everyone divided

A MUM has sparked a fierce debate after sharing how she saves money on buying reed diffusers.

Making a home smell good is essential if you want it to feel cosy and welcoming - but although scented candles and reed diffusers can certainly help with this, they can oftentimes be pretty costly.

Luckily, one savvy woman, Rebecca Payne, has come to rescue with an easy hack that not only will add a lovely aroma to your home but also effectively slash the costs of buying reed diffusers.

Taking to TikTok, the 27-year-old parent, mum to daughter Millie, revealed how she uses a common cleaning product instead.

According to Rebecca, once the reed diffuser has run out and the bottle is empty you can easily refill it with something scented - and in her video, she used a little bit of Mrs Hinch's-beloved Zoflora.

Although the cult favourite brand offers a wide range of cleaning essentials, the 27-year-old, from the UK, used Zoflora 3 in 1 Action Concentrated Disinfectant Linen Fresh.

This product, which is said to provide ''all day freshness'', can be picked up from most supermarkets and retailers, including Sainsbury's where it sells for £1.70 for a 120ml of the liquid.

Meanwhile, a reed diffuser of the same scent - but a smaller, 80ml bottle - would set you back by £3.50, which is also the cheapest option at the major supermarket.

In the clip, which has since left people totally divided, the mum didn't give any specific measurements - but she could be seen filling up the empty container with about a 50:50 ratio of the disinfectant spray before topping it off with a similar amount of tap water.

Once done, she put the original sticks back inside and placed the DIY Zoflora ''reed diffuser'' in her bathroom.

All chuffed with the trick, Rebecca wrote in the comments: ''Saves so much money and I love the smell of Zoflora.''

According to the savvy mum, who posts under the username @beckpyne, she will usually buy a brand new reed diffuser after a few refills of this hack.

But although the self-confessed ''cheapskate'' mum swore by this hack, dozens of concerned social media users raced to comments to urge others to steer away from it.

One warned: ''Oh God, please don’t do this, t’s not to be inhaled for obvious reasons. This is natural selection at its finest.''

Someone else agreed, adding: ''You do not want to be breathing that in, concentrated.''

A third chimed in: ''Very flammable and bad for you.''

Luckily, for the 27-year-old, who boats more than 7k followers on the popular platform, there were also heaps of positive comments, including some left by those thanking her.

One exclaimed: ''Omg, absolute life hack!''

A fellow parent chimed in: ''I’ve been doing this for ages, love it, house smells so nice.

''I don’t dilute it and I have kids and no, the smell is not over powering or toxic to the kids, always put out off child's reach.''

''I do this, use the midnight blooms Zoflora, it's gorgeous,'' another cleaning fanatic penned.

Hitting back at the meanies, Rebecca said that she'd been doing this for years and been ''okay'' all this time.

She added: ''It’s literally on Zoflora's website as a hack? Plus, reed diffusers are highly flammable anyway.''

Is it safe?

The Sun have reached out to Zoflora for an expert comment.

But although Rebecca is not the only one to rave about this money-saving hack, it's worth noting that this product is flammable - so if you do try this hack, make sure to place the DIY reed diffuser somewhere where the tots, or your pets, can't reach it.
