He had originally planned to tell Chloe over the festive period, but at the end of last week, he told Charity he couldn't face sneaking around for weeks and was going to tell her the next day.

In tonight's episode, Mack was up early and all set to tell Chloe, but she got in there first with news that she had a surprise.

Mack went to work briefly, where Charity berated him for not doing it straightaway.

But returning home, Mack got a surprise which made his heart sink when he saw that Chloe had decorated the house with Christmas attire early, while their son Reuben sat in a high chair with reindeer antlers on his head.

An oblivious Chloe excitedly talked about how she was going to take so many pictures of their first Christmas together and with their son, before Mack snapped and asked her to stop.

Sinking onto the sofa, he apologised for being sharp, but told her: "I'm not spending Christmas with you. I can't spend any more time with you."

As Chloe started to question why, she asked: "Just tell me, that it isn't Charity."

Mack simply replied: "I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry. I wanted this to work, not just for us but for Reuben as well.

"And I never, ever wanted to hurt you, that's why I put it off for so long, and I hate myself for it.

"But then we'd spend time together and I'd see you with Reuben and think you're such a great mum, and I'd think 'what is wrong with me? I'm so, so lucky, and yet I don't want to be part of this'."

When Chloe asked if he was sleeping with Charity, he avoided the question and replied: "We are too different. You are lovely, there is someone out there who can make you very, very happy."

But standing up, Chloe said he had "had his quota of cliches, you're insulting my intelligence and I don't like it," before telling him to go.

As Mack went to Charity's and Chloe was seen sobbing into sister Amy's arms, Emmerdale viewers took to X - formerly Twitter - to blast Mackenzie.

One wrote: "What an a*****e, Mack is."

Another added: "Poor Chloe she honestly deserves better."

A third tweeted: "Mack was never going to stay with Chloe, poor thing."

Emmerdale airs on ITV1 and is available on ITVX.
