45+2. As it happens, it's Newcastle and Anthony Gordon in particular pushing for a goal before the break.

The ex-Everton man first curls a low one wide of Raya's left-hand post, and then soon has a more powerful effort blocked by Saliba.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

    45. The board goes up to signal five minutes stoppage time at the end of the first half.

An Arsenal goal now, and this tie would have a very different complexion at the break.

Three-nil with 45 minutes remaining, and surely the Toon Army can prepare for Wembley.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

    43. And now William Saliba goes into the book too.

The Frenchman - usually unflappable - has been roughed up tonight, and now struggles to cope with Gordon as he pursues Burn's raking pass.

A grab, a grapple and a shirt pull later, and Saliba sees yellow.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

    41. Excellent defensive work from Bruno Guimaraes, who drops into his own area to intercept and then draws a foul from Kai Havertz.

Once again, Kieran Trippier is over to have words with an Arsenal player, and again gets the intended reaction.

A push from Havertz, and he becomes the first player to receive a yellow card tonight.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

Any momentum Arsenal had built up on the night appears to have evaporated.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

    37. Arsenal are taking no chances - Gabriel Martinelli has limped off and on in his place is young Ethan Nwaneri.

Even if this League Cup has gone, the Gunners still have their sights on the Premier League.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

    35. Things are getting worse for Arsenal.

A goal down on the night and up against it, and now Gabriel Martinelli has gone down off the ball.

The Brazilian is holding his hamstring, and this is exactly what Mikel Arteta didn't want.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

    33. Newcastle haven't lost a League Cup game in which they have taken the lead since seven-and-a-half years.

If they are to miss out on Wembley, they're going to have to concede at least three here. It seems unfathomable.

    29. Trippier leaves one on Gabriel as he tracks him all the way up the far touchline.

One to keep an eye on.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

    19. This time St James' Park can celebrate!

Jacob Murphy is the goalscorer, but it's all down again to the pace, power and precision of Alexander Isak.

The Swedish striker messes with William Saliba as they challenge for a long ball forward, cleverly poking around the corner for Anthony Gordon.

The winger quickly returns with a reverse and that sets Isak away again, who this time powers a shot from the edge of the area on to the crossbar.

Thankfully for the hosts, it rebounded kindly for Murphy, who made no mistake in finding the empty net.

Less than a minute after those Odegaard chances, and Wembley is within touching distance for the Toon.

  • This one does count!

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    18. Here come Arsenal!

Two opportunities for Martin Odegaard in quick succession, the first a half-chance, the second glaring.

A slick one-two sets up a curler for the captain, one that is blocked at close range by Botman.

And then, seconds later, quick one-touch football sees Martinelli poke a short pass through for Odegaard, who hammered against the outside of the post from 15 yards.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    16. The movement of Isak continues to impress.

Gabriel and Saliba - usually a defensive duo as composed as they come - are looking shaky whenever the Swede takes flight.

    14. Lewis-Skelly dinks a teasing ball into the Newcastle area, only for Dan Burn to stick out one of his long legs to poke it back to Dubravka.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    12. Gabriel urges his teammates to calm down after Raya panics a clearance straight up in the air.

He's right to urge caution too. There is still a lot of football to be played in this tie.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    10. The home fans are roaring their side, cheering every free-kick and throw-in won.

How they would love for a trophy to be brought back to the north-east this season.

    8. This game is being played at some tempo.

Gordon is as pumped up as anyone, and commits his second unnecessary foul of the night.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    6. St James' Park erupts, and it's that man again - Alexander Isak!

Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali win the ball back in midfield, and Anthony Gordon slips a pass through to Isak on the right.

The striker powers away from the Arsenal defence and hammers a beauty across David Raya into the top left corner to trigger wild scenes...

...but they start to simmer down when it becomes apparent VAR are taking a look.

Was Isak marginally offside when Gordon threaded his pass through? It's incredibly tight and takes times to confirm.

Eventually, referee Simon Hooper receives the news and announces to the crowd that the goalscorer was offside and it remans 0-0 on the night.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    3. The hosts survive the free-kick, and the subsequent corner (taken short) that follows.

Newcastle then break at pace themselves with Murphy in full flight on the right. The winger gets ahead of Martinelli, who bundles him over and is fortunate to avoid an early yellow card.

  • Kick-off - Newcastle v Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    1. Howay we go! Simon Hooper blows his whistle, and Arsenal get things going as they attack the Gallowgate.

And it takes just 12 seconds for Anthony Gordon to be reprimanded for a silly shirt pull on Kai Havertz deep in the Newcastle half - you don't want to be giving Arsenal needless set-pieces on a night like this.
