Q: At 5ft 2in and a 32F bra size, I’ve always been self-conscious about my boobs, plus they cause me a lot of pain.

I’m turning 30 this year and, as a birthday gift to myself, I’ve decided to have a breast reduction.

I’ve booked time off for the op, but I’m worried about how long I’ll need to heal.

Although I have a good working relationship with my boss, he is in his 50s and our interactions have always been very professional.

I don’t know what to tell him – or even if it’s necessary, due to the personal nature of the procedure.

There will obviously be quite a big change in my appearance, too.

How should I navigate this?

A: It’s great that you’ve made a decision that will benefit both your health and wellbeing.

Having this conversation with your boss requires a delicate balance between being honest and professional, but you should only tell him as much or as little as you feel comfortable.

Choose the right time and place, where you won’t be interrupted, and be direct.

Explain that this decision is primarily for health reasons, and mention the expected recovery period and any potential impact on your ability to perform certain tasks.

Emphasise your commitment to fulfilling your responsibilities and say you’ll keep him and HR updated on your progress and any potential changes to your return date.

Focus on the aspects that are relevant to your work and assure your boss that you have made sure things will run smoothly during your absence.

Most employers appreciate honesty, especially when it comes to health-related matters.
