Amazing 12p hack using kitchen essential stops windscreen ice in its tracks

A HUMBLE item of fresh produce can save you time wiping away frost on your car each morning.

The brown onion, or 'Allium cepa' in Latin, is the flavour workhorse in Western cooking - the French famously even turning it into a soup.

The eye-watering vegetable, famously chomped by Australian PM Tony Abbott raw, also has another use - stopping windscreen ice forming on your car.

It is a hassle to be rushing on your way to work in the morning, only to have to spend a few minutes getting rid of the ice so you can drive safely.

The tip is to cut your onion in half and then smear the flat side of the bulb across the windscreen, wiping the juices along the glass.

You need to do it in the evening before the frost has a chance to settle overnight.

The science behind what seems like a hack too crazy to be true is that the onion juices have sugar molecules which create a barrier on the glass and break down frost as it forms on the window.

Potatoes can also be used for the same trick.

Onions can be bought for 12p at Tesco, but you'll probably have one in your kitchen already.

One mum has also found another good tip to getting rid of frost in the morning.

She explained in a TikTok video: "Little life hack that I learnt a few years ago that I can't live without.

"Now it's getting to the frozen mornings and everyone's rushing... [but] this is super quick and easy.

"All you need to do is put lukewarm water from the tap straight into a plastic bag...hover it over your windscreen, it melts it all.

"There's no messing, it literally takes five seconds...you don't need to stand there scrubbing the ice off, freezing your hands off."

In the clip, Chloe demonstrated how effective the trick is, using the water to clear her windscreen of frost in seconds.

Meanwhile, one motorist has found another kitchen item which can be used to de-ice the car when the ice is low.

User randomcarl00 posted the nine-second TikTok clip showing them wiping the container across the glass with the ice falling off it.

"How to properly de ice your car," he says with a winky face emoji.

plastic lunchbox sells for £2.50 at Waitrose, but most of us will have one in our children's school bags or Tupperware containers hanging around the back of a kitchen draw.
