I got rid of my grass and filled my front lawn with native plants – my neighbor was a bit annoyed but I love it

A HOMEOWNER has decided to do away with a traditional lawn for something more eco-friendly.

They filled their yard with native plants as opposed to maintaining a bed of grass.

Redditor Salvia_fontuckii posted pictures of the home transformation on the social media platform.

They said the changes took two years in southern California.

The homeowner too their lawn from grass that appeared to be slightly browning to something much more lush.

Despite clashing with their neighbor over it, they insist they love the new look.

NEIGHBOR COMPLAINTS

One Redditor asked the obvious — what do the neighbors think?

"I could tell she was a bit annoyed at first," they said.

"Since the lots were borderless, her dog and grandkids would run around on the grass well into my yard.

"So when I started removing the grass up to the property line, it reduced the useable space by quite a bit."

"Then once everything was removed and covered with wood chips, and the plants were tiny, I’m sure she wasn’t happy.

"I don’t know how she feels now."

CONCERNS ABOUT GOING LAWN-FREE

The homeowner added their concern regarding the neighbor's thoughts on choosing native plants over a grass lawn.

However, after two years of working on the project, they were less bothered about it.

"I like to meander through to look at how everything is doing," they said.

They pointed out the wildlife that came to their yard after going lawn free.

"I like to see the hummingbirds and other birds using it. I like to see the variety of bees, flies, and caterpillars," they said.

"I like to sit out front and wave to neighbors as they walk by, which is something that I never did before."

FINAL THOUGHTS

Other Redditors chimed in on the look of the eco-friendly yard.

"Thanks for sharing, your landscape looks lush instead of dried out," one wrote. "[I] saved the pic as guidance for my own project."

"Fantastic job," another added. "Now if only the neighbors would join you."

"This is absolutely stunning," a third commented. "You did a beautiful job and it looks a million times better than a lawn."
